View photo In this Friday, Aug. 8, 2014 photograph, Milan Beko, a Serbian tycoon and former government minister … BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Milan Beko, a former Serbian government minister and prominent businessman, was shot and seriously wounded in Belgrade on Friday, police said. An unidentified assailant shot Beko twice in the stomach in front of his house in a residential area of the capital city, police said. They said the shooter probably was accompanied by another person to help with the attack. Police launched a search, setting up patrols and stopping vehicles throughout the city looking for the suspects. Beko, 53, who was rushed to the Belgrade emergency hospital, underwent surgery and was in serious condition, doctors said. He had served briefly as a privatization minister during the rule of the late strongman Slobodan Milosevic in the 1990s. Beko started in the marketing business, but later set up his own company and served as a consultant. He is now considered one of Serbia's wealthiest businessmen. He has close ties with liberal Serbian parties and today's conservative government.
